Have you ever kept a New Year’s Resolution for the entire year? If you haven’t, consider yourself normal. 73% of those who set yearly resolution goals don’t achieve them. What typically happens is the goal gets so overwhelming that it’s easier to just give up. You might say to yourself, “What’s wrong with me, why the heck can’t I stick with it?”
What if lack of motivation isn’t the problem? Most folks start off highly motivated. Chances are good that what they really lack is a plan to achieve their goal. Research shows that you increase your chances of success tenfold when you have a system in place. Successful people have them. Successful organizations have them.
Systems actually support those things in which we have control. All you need is a structure that’s tailor-made for you – your unique abilities and circumstances. Here are five components to a setting up a successful plan:
Goal-Setting System for Success
GO WITH WHAT YOU KNOW
Tap into what you know has already worked. Take inventory of the positive experiences, knowledge, education, imagination, intuition, spiritual connection, meditation techniques, etc. that you can draw upon so you don’t have to recreate the wheel.
RECLAIM YOUR STRENGTHS & SELF-WORTH
What gives you pride? What’s working for you now? What has worked for you in the past? Make a list of your past successes, skills, talents, gifts, and capabilities that you can leverage today that will give you confidence in your ability.
IDENTIFY CHALLENGES & OBSTACLES
Make note of your fears, insecurities, excuses, habits & behaviors. Put them on notice that their services are no longer needed. You’ll also need to identify and reframe any environmental road blocks that are present through your newly-motivated, success-conscious mindset.
CREATE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Assemble an infrastructure of people, resources, and systems that will provide you with support, encouragement, and positive energy. A positive structure will enrich you and ensure your success.
GAIN & IMPROVE RESOURCES
Align yourself with who or what is necessary for you to facilitate what you need. This means you must acquire what you lack in knowledge, education, skills, and influence through coaches, role models, mentors, experts, professionals, books, videos, etc. Be willing to invest in the most important thing you have – YOU, your well-being.
And remember, if you have your heart set on achieving your goal, it’s important not to waiver in your determination to reach it. The only thing you can be flexible on is your plan to achieve it. If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan but never the goal.
